When the help is not helping

Very often, our parents want to help us or gift us something to make our lives easier, and they end up making it way more complicated. When we're offered something like this, we tend to accept because we want THEM to feel they are collaborating in some way, not because we really want what's being gifted to us. This soon-to-be bride shared a story about a mother-in-law who seems to have taken things too far with her involvement. The question is, did she really?

  • Emotions before weddings run high. People become so stressed, and they want every little thing to come out perfectly. Of course, that's impossible, and it's always better to try to stress less than to lose ourselves trying to reach the perfect wedding ceremony and afterparty. In this particular case, I don't think the mother really did anything wrong, and if she did, her daughter fixed it right away when she called mother and father-in-law to make sure everything was ok. So accepting the 'no' might be in her best interest right now.

  • I highly doubt the groom's parents are trying to cause drama, and if they are, the couple can't do anything to neutralize it at this point; they have been as polite as they can. No big event can go without drama. Sometimes we have to enjoy what we have and let go of what we can't control. This is very new-agey of me, but it's totally true. We shouldn't look for ghosts where they might not be any. If somebody told you they are tired, one should take that at face value. Insisting once is enough. On my last birthday, I was really sad because two of my closest friends couldn't make it; I was sad for a couple of minutes and then I realized, there were like 15 other friends that did make it there with me, and I could be very well enjoying that instead of crying about what was missing, that constituted a very important life lesson for me, lol.
